Pilates FAQ

How do I get started?

To ensure that you are guided in the right direction, we encourage all new students to take three introductory lessons. This gives our professional staff an opportunity to identify your unique, individual needs, learn more about your body, and familiarize you with the equipment.

How often should I do Pilates?

Two to three times a week is a good frequency. As with any form of exercise, consistency is key, and it is a good idea to not let too much time pass in order to remember the previous lesson and incorporate the information in your body.

What should I wear?

Pilates is usually done barefoot or in socks. Make sure your clothes are roomy enough to let you move and stretch fully without being baggy. Your instructor will need to be able to see your body and the alignment of your bones and whether your muscles are engaging properly. Avoid excess accessories during your Pilates work out. Hair should be out of the face and tied back if it is long. We also ask that everyone refrain from wearing strong scents while in the studio.

How Will I Benefit From Pilates?

Important benefits of Pilates include strength and flexibility, mental and muscular coordination, increased lung capacity and circulation, increased bone density and joint health, improved posture and spinal alignment, core strength and enhanced mind/body connection. Practicing Pilates regularly can make you stronger, longer and leaner while increasing positive body awareness.

What is the “Core”?

Your body's core is the area around your trunk and pelvis that consists of the deep abdominals and muscles of the back. When you have core stability, the muscles in your pelvis, lower back, hips and abdomen work in sync. Strong core muscles make it easier to perform physical activities from picking up children to picking up laundry. Weak core muscles leave you vulnerable to injuries, bad posture and lower back pain.

How Quickly Will I See Results?

Joseph Pilates said that "you'll feel better in 10 sessions, look better in 20 and have a whole new body in 30 sessions." Most of our clients have found this to be true and many start seeing results right away. Most importantly, our clients start to feel better almost instantly.

Do Men Benefit From Pilates?

Keep in mind: Pilates was created by a man! Men generally have less flexibility and a greater degree of upper body strength than women, so Pilates helps to create longer, more agile muscles as well as to counter-strengthen the core and lower body. From CEO's and athletes to those recovering from injuries, Pilates helps both men and women retrain and re-strengthen the body for optimal performance.

I have health issues that limit my participation in regular exercise programs, can I do Pilates?

Pilates can be an excellent option for you. First, you should check with your physician and get written approval to begin a program. Please discuss this with us before your first session. It is important that you work with qualified Pilates instructors who are experienced with your particular issues and can develop a safe & effective exercise program for you.
